A question for the masses, or at least those of you with dogs.

I currently feed my dog Iams dog food and have been feeding this since the beginning. I'm wondering about other foods out there with better ingredients that are perhaps more natural. Olivia isn't having any problems with Iams, this is really just out of my own curiosity. If there is something better out there that I could be feeding her, I want to know about it. Also, places that deliver dog food would be welcomed, too. For those of you who do this, is it that much more expensive than picking it up at the store? What are you all feeding? Recommendations are welcomed. Thank you!

Hi -- I saw you on my Friends/Friends page :)

Right now we're feeding our dogs the Rachael Ray brand you can get at your local supermarket. We've found it to be the kibble with the least amount of filler as well as preservatives that is also the most budget-friendly.

One of our dogs has a delicate digestive system, so most national brands don't work with her. For awhile they were eating either Nutro or Wellsong, and another organic brand I could only get at a specialty pet store. She's never done better on any of those as much as she's done with the Rachael Ray.

Hey, it's Rox (pawpower on twitter). I don't feed kibble but I do know that Wellness, Natural Balance and Orijen are all really good foods. I do know that Natural Balance can be found at Petco if you have one near by.

Hey, thanks for your comment. I'm leaning towards Orijen. Petfooddirect has it, and I can get it delivered, which is a plus.

I'm feeding my two dogs Flint River Ranch trout and potato formula. They are doing really, really well on it and they both have food issues. It's only available via the internet and delivery to your door.

Dog food recommendation

I'm feeding Julia California Natural, and she's doing really well on it. You can either order it online through petfooddirect, which provides a 20% discount to dog guides (code is "GUIDE DOG") or you can get it at a local store that specializes in natural pet food. The local store I purchase it from delivers once a week so I order a 36 lb bag every 8 weeks. Hope this is helpful.

before switching to raw I fed Wellness core or blue buffalo wilderness. Bulue buffalo is available at petsmart and petco and both are available from petfoddirect.com who's delivery i highly recommend. If you use the guide dog discount code someone else mentioned (it's actually 15% not 20) the discount covers shipping costs and then a little. I use PFD for almost all my pet supplies.

good luck!

Thank you. I really appreciate your input. I know of a few people feeding raw, but I'm just not comfortable with the concept yet, I don't think. How exactly *does* it work? Inquiring minds and all that.

As far as kibble, I'd go with Nature's Variety's Instinct line (I feed Yara the chicken). Wellness is also very good.

I used to feed EVO until they sold out to P&G (who own Ians, by the way). Don't trust they won't ruin the greatness of that food and Yara (among others) got kind of sick on the new formula anyway.

LJ cut off my comment. Anyway for reasons on my food choices -- I try to feed something without corn and not a huge wheat content. Yara can't have any wheat, so the foods she's been on are all grain free. I also like that they don't have 10 billion ingredients and the company's aren't big conglomerates and all. Both foods I've used (and Wellness too) can be ordered from PFD and shipped right to you for pretty comparable price (plus the 20% discount for being a guide dog). I'd stay away from anything that doesn't have meat as the first few ingredients - and you want a meat MEAL because just the meat means it's watered down (and thus not really the main ingredient).

Anyway, that's my thoughts on kibbles. I definitely am a supporter of raw, but it can be pricey and inconvenient to get if you don't have a local store or butcher you trust. Nature's Variety actually has a WONDERFUL frozen raw line, but the closest store to me is not really on a busline and over $30 for a cab back and forth.

Thank you! I really do appreciate your input. I don't know if I'm brave enough to try raw. Haha!

I feed Dee wellness superfive mix with Salmon, Lamb, rice, and barley. I've also fed nature's variety raw instinct and California natural herring and sweet potato to past guides.

I have been feeding Blue Buffalo since Meg's bout with what I eventually called "the periodic pukeys" in 2005-2006. The vet eventually suggested she might have an allergy to salmon, and I combed the aisles for foods without salmon or "fish meal," which I felt may be a nondescript and at the the time wasn't willing to risk trusting. At the time I only found two foods. Blue had the added bonus of also including glucosamine, which was good for her since she was also dealing with arthritis. When I got Loretta, I just kept feeding it. My cats are also on it, and the benefits to the coats are amazing. When all the recall stuff went on, Blue only had one product recalled, a kitten food. This made me feel a lot better about what I was feeding.

It does include some grains (not corn but some other non-allergenic grains), so if you're looking for a grainless food this is not the food for you.

As a new dog owner, we've been feeding our dog Nutro. We've been pretty happy with it (our dog's coat looks and feels great), but we're actually going to switch to Beaver Dam and give that a shot. Joey's mom used to work for them and she swears that it's really great (nutritional, natural, all that) for dogs, and that dogs go crazy over it because it's made with real beef, pork, and fish (no fillers). It's also more cost effective than Nutro. We'll be switching our dog over to Beaver Dam in the next few weeks. If the results are significantly great or significantly negative, I'll be sure to let you know!

Thanks! If you could let me know how the switch goes, I would greatly appreciate it.
