I was just made aware of the post concerning the want for LJ to add the ability to have ALT tags be optional for user pictures. For those who might not know, an ALT tag is just a bit of text that, if used, would go along with the uploaded image and describe it, depending on what was written in that particular field. As of right now, that access isn't there, (all I get when I come across a user picture is my screenreader saying "link graphic img/userinfo". Yeah, real descriptive!). I often wonder what people's user pictures are of, and there have also been times when whole comment threads/conversations have been based on an icon and I'm totally lost, unless I ask for an explanation. For those of you who want to, take a minute to go here, (the same page as was linked above), and make your voice be heard as to why having ALT text as an optional eddition to the site would make it an overall better experience for blind and visually impaired individuals.
