After I wrote last, I did end up going to bed and getting minimal sleep. I was up by seven and out of the house by a little after nine. Going right to the graduation ceremony itself, I really thought that it was a nice ceremony and went well. Senator Carper spoke, and I liked the message he gave. He gave us graduates three pieces of advice: to give back to the community, take every opportunity that presents itself and to be leaders. ALl in all, a very well-put message. Before he spoke, one of my PHilosophy professors also talked, and his speech was also full of good things to remember. I think it was he who said that now we can learn for the sheer joy of learning and not because we have to satisfy any kind of requirements. He told us to never stop learning, which I believe in wholeheartedly.
After those speeches, it was finally time to have people walk across the stage and shake hands and get our diplomas, which really was a cardboard holder for it with another piece of cardboard inside; the real degree will be mailed out to us later. I successfully made it across the stage, with the help of Olivia, and everytrhing went off without incident. It's weird to know that it's all over and I'm just waiting for whatever will happen next, which door will open, what will result once I turn the page.
After the ceremony, the family and I went to a restaurant to have lunch and to celebrate our Birthday, (that of my two sisters and I). I thought it was pretty cool that graduation and my 23rd birthday fell on the same day. Much fun was had at lunch, and I made sure to thank everyone for coming to the ceremony earlier and let them know how much it meant to me and that I appreciated it. After lunch, Peter, Kathryn and myself ended up on a train to Philly, which was a total surprise to me. Once in Philly, we checked in at our hotel and chilled there for a bit. After awhile, we left in a cab and went to a building the name of which I didn't know at that time to get tickets to something that I wasn't sure of then, either. That something turned out to be Rent, which was being shown at the Academy of Music. Peter had arranged to get three tickets to the show, and somehow people knew of my going and were able to keep it a secret. That is especially something for Kathryn, because a lot of times she'll spill part of or all of a secret that she isn't suppose to.
Onto the show itself, it was unbelievable! I was totally shocked that I was even really trulu and actually seing Rent in the first place, and the fact that the acting and music and combination of the two was amazing just made it all the more awesome. All in all, the show was fantabulous, but I do have to say that the actor who played Tom Collins had a voice that was, I thought, a bit too young for the character. When it came time for the "I'll Cover You" reprise, he slightly messed it up. He didn't slied on the words "Be my lover..." as he should have done. I shouldn't be picky like that, but when you're as familiar with the show as I am, I guess it can't be helped. I did enjoy the show, though, and am very glad I was able to see it with the people I saw it with.
Today consisted of hanging around in Philly, seeing some of the historical aspects of it, including taking a carriage ride around the National Park and Society Hill area. I learned a few things while on the tour, like the fact that Philadelphia was originally the caputal of the United States. Society Hill is where all the rich people lived. We also went into another exhibit that was inside a building that shocased, among other people, Ruth Patrick, who is most noted for her contribution to the discovery of pollution. I had no idea that it was she who had done so, and was glad to learn that fact.
After seeing the exhibits, we had lunch at Johnny Rockets, (all of us ordered way too much food), which included them wait staff singing "Happy Birthday" to Kathryn and I. She and I each got a balloon as well as ice cream. I couldn't eat nearly any of my ice cream because I was so full by that point, and unfortunately my balloon popped once outside, perhaps due to the sun. Either way, I really did have fun yesterday and today as well. I'm glad that Peter, Kathryn and myself could all hang out together as we all have fun when doing so.
I've been home now for the past while, just hanging out. The second half of the day hasn't been as happy as the first, but I guess you have that sometimes. Peter and I have decided to take a break from one another and not have any contact whatsoever. As a result, I don't know if this is it, or if we'll eventually be able to be friends again. The hardest part for me is that I still care for him and want to be friends, but if we unintentionally keep hurting ourselves, that isn't healthy, and I know it isn't. Nor is it fair to either of us. I guess I just need to take things as they come and hope for the best, thinking positively. I know I'll get through it, but it doesn't make things any easier. I can't say I exactly like this arrangement, but I do believe that it's what needs to be done, a fact upon which we both agree. Why is that if you care for someone, the best thing is sometimes to distance yourself from that person or separate ties completely? I can't say I understand that. I honestly hope it doesn't come to that, I really do.
I guess that's all for this entry. Thanks all for the Birthday wishes, be they on LJ, facebook or in person. I'm really glad to have such wonderful friends. I just hope you know how much I appreciate you, yes, every single one of you. More when I have it.
